Testing the Likeable, Therefore Abundant Hypothesis: Bird Species Likeability by Urban Residents Varies Significantly with Species Traits

چکیده
The urbanization of landscapes filters bird communities to favor particular species traits, driven in part by the changes that homeowners make amount and quality habitat yards. We suggest an ultimate driver these proximate mechanisms underlying community change with respect is likeability traits urban residents. hypothesize likeability, modulated influences degree which alter availability on their properties thereby affects population sizes urbanized landscapes. refer this new hypothesis as Likeable, therefore Abundant Hypothesis. Hypothesis predicts (1) varies morphological behavioral (2) use trait-based a motivator modify properties, (3) residential populations at landscape scales. tested first prediction using survey 298 undergraduate students University North Carolina Charlotte who were asked rank preferences for 85 forest generalist edge/open country songbird grouped according 10 traits. Survey respondents preferred very small, primarily blue or black are insectivorous, aerial bark foragers, residents, culturally unimportant. On other hand, disliked large large, yellow orange forage ground and/or flycatching, migratory, important. If true, natural resource managers planners could capitalize high nevertheless negatively affected convince residents actively manage conservation.

Urban Bird Feeders Dominated by a Few Species and Individuals
The practice of garden bird feeding is a global phenomenon, involving millions of people and vast quantities of food annually. Many people engage in the practice of feeding assuming that birds gain some benefit from the food they provide, yet recent studies have revealed the potential for detrimental impacts as well. However, there is still a paucity of information on the impacts of feeding, in...
متن کاملThe Pattern of Influenza Virus Attachment Varies among Wild Bird Species
The ability to attach to host cells is one of the main determinants of the host range of influenza A viruses. By using virus histochemistry, we investigate the pattern of virus attachment of both a human and an avian influenza virus in colon and trachea sections from 12 wild bird species. We show that significant variations exist, even between closely related avian species, which suggests that ...
متن کاملSpecies-Area Relationships Are Controlled by Species Traits
The species-area relationship (SAR) is one of the most thoroughly investigated empirical relationships in ecology. Two theories have been proposed to explain SARs: classical island biogeography theory and niche theory. Classical island biogeography theory considers the processes of persistence, extinction, and colonization, whereas niche theory focuses on species requirements, such as habitat a...
متن کاملConfronting species distribution model predictions with species functional traits
Species distribution models are valuable tools in studies of biogeography, ecology, and climate change and have been used to inform conservation and ecosystem management. However, species distribution models typically incorporate only climatic variables and species presence data. Model development or validation rarely considers functional components of species traits or other types of biologica...
متن کاملIndependent colonization of multiple urban centres by a formerly forest specialist bird species.
Urban areas are expanding rapidly, but a few native species have successfully colonized them. The processes underlying such colonization events are poorly understood. Using the blackbird Turdus merula, a former forest specialist that is now one of the most common urban birds in its range, we provide the first assessment of two contrasting urban colonization models. First, that urbanization occu...
